Plummeting temperatures serve as a constant reminder: winter isn’t over yet. While television broadcasts and online articles are quick to offer advice about how to prevent pipes from freezing, very few see the topic through to the end. In other words, if your pipes actually freeze, these reports and write ups aren’t going to help you. If it is already too late for preventative maintenance, here’s what you need to do:
Don’t Turn Off The Faucet
While it may seem counter-intuitive to keep the water running, it is often the best thing to do. “As the frozen area starts to melt, water will flow and running water will help melt ice in the pipe,” a Feb. 19 CBS News report explains. Whenever possible keep the water running… but within reason. If you can turn the water down to just a trickle, that is enough to help ice melt while preventing flooding.
Begin Water Removal ASAP
Don’t wait for the plumber to arrive. If a pipe has burst and there is excess water and/or flooding in your home, do whatever you can to remove water ASAP. Standing water can result in mold and mildew buildup, and eventually even attract pests. Do whatever it takes. Use paper towels, bath towels, mops, and wet-dry vacuums to keep surrounding areas as dry as possible.
Fix It Yourself (Or At Least Get Repairs Started)
If you can see where exactly pipes have cracked and burst, a constant tension hose clamp may temporarily fix the problem. Heavy duty hose clamps typically consist of a band and a screw; when fastened, they provide tight, even pressure from all sides to cut off leaks at the source. It is a good idea to have a few sizes and styles handy in household tool kits, in the event of a sudden leak. Make certain constant tension hose clamps are securely in place, and call a plumber to assess pipes and plumbing for any signs of further damage.
So your pipes burst. Now what? Keep water running at a low trickle to help ice melt, start drying the surrounding area as soon as you can, and repair large cracks and fissures with heavy duty hose clamps whenever possible.
Excellent article. I am facing a few of these issues as well..
