There are many sizes and types of hose clamps, which are used in a variety of applications. Basically, they are used to attach and seal a hose onto a fitting, like a barb or nipple. The importance of properly fitted and installed fuel hose clamps was highlighted in a recent case involving gas golf carts, according to the design and engineering site PDDnet.com.
Club Car, a golf cart and utility vehicle manufacturer, issued a recall earlier this month.
“An improperly factory-installed hose clamp can rub and wear a hole in the fuel tank, causing a leak, and posing a fire hazard,” the recall stated.
The company has received at least three reports of incidents where the air intake hose clamp rubbed the fuel tank. Fortunately, no reports of fire or injuries have surfaced at the time of this writing. The company did say that any consumers who purchased a cart between July 2014 and August 2015 should cease operation of it immediately and contact Club Car to schedule a repair.
The exact model is reported by the company to be the 2014-2016 Precedent gas golf and transport vehicles, which vary in size, models and colors, and are used for short-distance transportation. The vehicles, which were manufactured in the U.S., sold for between $5,000 and $9,000.
The very first hose clamp was invented in 1921 by a former Royal Navy Commander named Lumley Robinson. This specific type is known as the screw/band clamp because it features a band, usually made of galvanized or stainless steel, into which a screw thread pattern has been cut or pressed. Robinson would go on to form L. Robinson and Co (Gillingham) Ltd. in Gillingham, Kentucky and owns the trademark for the jubilee cup.
Even though they are one of the smaller parts when it comes to bigger pieces of vehicles/machinery, hose clamps should be regularly checked for signs of wear and malfunction and should be taken care of as they serve an important function to whatever they may be sealing, clamping, or otherwise holding in place.
Appreciate it for this post, I am a big fan of this website would like to keep updated.
