With some luck, U.S. households will only have to call a plumber for emergencies. Many homeowners, however, are abusing pipes and plumbing systems without even knowing it, which can lead to some pretty serious problems and a professional coming in to clean up the mess. Avoid these things to keep plumbing in tip-top shape:
Throwing Just Anything Down The Garbage Disposal
It may be tempting to treat the garbage disposal as if it can conveniently grind up everything, but that’s just not realistic. According to Popular Mechanics, pumpkin seeds, watermelon rinds, and potato peels are just some common items that ultimately clog the drain. And — let’s face it — most people do a lot worse. Coffee grounds, egg shells, small bits of meat or meat shavings, tiny bones, most vegetables, and most fruits can go into the garbage disposal without any problems. Grinding lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit peels will even give the garbage disposal a clean, fresh scent.
Being A Little Too Confident In DIY Repairs
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) repairs can save you a great deal of money — if you know what you’re doing. If you’re going to take on plumbing projects on your own, doing a little research first doesn’t hurt. If anything, it’ll save you the trouble of having to do more serious repairs or having to call in a professional. For example, most hose leaks (e.g., laundry hose connections) and some pipe leaks can be easily mended with spring hose clamps or stainless steel hose clamps. They are available in a number of different sizes, apply even pressure on all sides (if installed correctly), and form an air-tight seal between a hose and a barb. While this an easy fix for hose connections and select pipes, it’s important to know your stuff. Fixing a gap, leak, or break between two different metals requires a special dielectric union connector to prevent corrosion, for example.
Avoid common plumbing mistakes around your home. Be selective about what does and doesn’t go into the garbage disposal, mend household hose connections with stainless steel hose clamps, and do a little extra digging to find out the best ways to fix less obvious plumbing problems.
