3 Different Types of Hose Clamps

For any job that involves the transportation of water, the top priority is obviously to prevent any leaks. Not only can this unnecessarily boost water bills, but materials and structures surrounding it could be damaged due to the build up of moisture. Consequently, you’ll wind up facing restorative expenses as well.

In order to prevent what could be expensive leakage, there must be a tight seal connecting hoses and waterways. A hose clamp or hose clip is a handy tool that is manufactured to attach and seal a hose onto a fitting, like a barb or nipple.

There are generally several different types of hose clamps you can choose from:

1. Worm gear: Typically made from galvanized or stainless steel, the bands on these types of clamps are built with a line of slots down the side. On the opposite end of the clamp is an adjustment screw.

   Using a flat head screw driver, these worm gear bands can be loosened or tightened just by turning the screw. These clamps are likely so popular because of their versatility, ease of use, and because they are available in a large variety of sizes.

2. Spring: Spring hose clamp tools almost resemble a large pair of pliers. With two handles to open up the jaws, the pads on either end of the clamps can grip tightly onto many different surfaces.This clamp is also extremely versatile because it is not limited to cylindrical shapes. They can be used to pinch or squeeze any number of hoses, regardless of the size.
3. Wire: Rather than using a screw to slowly adjust the tightness of a seal, wire clamps use a strong metal band with openings at each end to feed metal wires through. These wires are used to loosen or tighten the clamp’s grip. Because they are so sturdy, these wire hose clamps are good for holding seals for extended periods of time. They are also easy to remove simply by detaching the wire and sliding the band off.
